ORTF Surround, ORTF-3D

The geometry of the existing “IRT Cross” was modified, and supercardioids were used instead of cardioids. Without changing the spatial sound quality, the microphone array now became rectangular instead of square and could be used in a relatively compact basket windscreen, with elastic suspension for the microphones and the basket. In 2016 the same international soccer tournament required a similar solution for 3D-Audio. Thus the “ORTF-3D” (2016) was born, a compact microphone arrangement with eight capsules for optimal recording of ambience for film or sports events. The geometry of the eight capsules was optimized for balanced imaging and lowest channel correlation, in order to achieve the highest listener immersion.
